Q. What does a “compromised debit or credit card” mean?

A. A compromised debit or credit card means that unauthorized individuals gained access to the card numbers possibly for the intention of fraudulent activity. Many merchants process their transactions at large payment centers where exposure to fraudulent activity can and has happened.

Q. How do I know when my debit or credit card is compromised?
A. You will be notified by us that your card has been compromised or you will see unauthorized transactions on your account.

Q. Could the credit union have prevented this incident?
A. The credit union has no control over where you use your card and how the merchants store your information.  Each merchant must attempt to protect the customer's information by ensuring that your information is secure.  The credit union does protect our members by reissuing new cards immediately when we are notified by Visa to reduce the chance of any fraudulent activity occurring on your account

Q. Why is a new Credit or Debit card re-issued?
A. A new card with a different number is issued to prevent any fraudulent activity that could take place. If automatic deductions were set up using card number, you will need to notify the appropriate vendors to make the card number change.

Q. Why was my Visa credit card blocked immediately?
A. We blocked the card immediately to protect our members from further unauthorized charges because some were starting to hit our member's cards.

Q. What steps are being taken to safeguard my debit or credit card?
A. As part of Laclede Community Credit Union’s "Privacy Policy", we do not disclose any personal information to unauthorized individuals. Visa  has their own fraud prevention measures in place to help guard against fraudulent activity.

Q. Should I be worried?
A. No, you should not be worried because in the case of a compromise, your card will be blocked. If any fraudulent activity takes place on your account due to the compromise, you will not be liable.

Q. How will I know if a fraudulent transaction occurs?
A. It is always smart to monitor the activity on all of your accounts regularly. If you notice any suspicious transactions, please notify Laclede Community Credit Union immediately.

Q. How can I prevent this in the future?
A. New safe guards against credit and debit card fraud are being instituted every day, but unfortunately it can’t be completely prevented.
